Cloche Almost Done

The only thing even remotely as bad as my blogging habits is my ability to get something finished and in the mail. As such, I'm posting this in the hope that it makes me a little more likely and eager to get this hat done and set while there's still time for it to be useful. Winter is still going on elsewhere, right?

First off, I forgot that Malabrigo and the size three of this hat needs just under one trip through the washing machine in order to be properly felted for a human-sized head. As such, I've had to put it on a big sangria pitcher in order to get the brim stretched enough that it will be wearable.

But my real problem comes in the form of buttons. I intended to go to the yellow house to get a nice button to really tie the hat together, but in three weekends, we still haven't gotten over there. So I struck out for Jo-Ann Fabrics last night and came up with these:

Here they are placed on the flower. Which one do you think I should use?

Button 1 On Flower:

Small Cork Men Carry Fishnet Stocking Off To Valhalla

I've been putting a lot of work into making another cloche, in spite of the fact that I still haven't quite gotten around to actually buying the button to finish the blue one. The reason I've dived into making the same thing for the third time is because a). it's a fricken awesome patter, and b). when we tried Bootsie's fishnet stockings onto her feet, we discovered that they were something like two inches too long. In all likelihood, I'm going to start on the second one, and try to use it as a guide to how far I have to rip back on the one I've already started. All the same, it was a little disheartening.

Here we see the Korknisse-- which are sort of like the Valkyries for knitting projects that have fallen in great battles-- coming down to whisk the fishnet stockings of to the mead halls of legend, where it will drink and share stories with other great knitting projects. Well, you know, until I come back for it. I'd throw in some kind of Orpheus reference here, but I think this metaphor is already a little too tenuous.

My efforts to design a Williamsburg Bridge scarf to make a nice compliment to the Brooklyn Bridge Scarf in Son of Stitch and Bitch have run into some problems in conveying the more complex pattern of the Williamsburg Bridge into the same 30 stitches that they use for the Brooklyn Bridge scarf. I'm wondering if I might be able to do the stitches on an angle, sort of like the multi-directional scarf-- but double knit. And that is just turning this project into a much larger production which may not be done by the end of winter.

Even so, I should try making a swatch like that, or maybe make it into a hat band. I wonder what kind of DK we have laying around. All of a sudden I regret that I'm not one of those people who catalog their entire stashes on Ravelry.

Hats and 'Hogs!

I have actually also been knitting a few things myself, though most of them have just ended up logged in Ravelry. My crowning achievement, though, has been the folded brim cloche from Maggie Pace's Felt It!. It's sort of like the side dishes (and dessert) that we brought to my brother's for Thanksgiving: incredibly simple with very impressive results.

The first cloche was made (of course) for my dear, sweet darling Betsy. We knew we wanted to start with a red Savoy that was reminiscent of the red of her Valentine scarf. Unfortunately, there wasn't a complementary red in the Savoy palette, but I think the tan that we ended up with looks lovely, especially with the button we found (at The Yellow House).

The second one is a thank you gift for her mom, who was gracious enough to give us a hand-me-down automobile, thus allowing us to both have jobs. The first attempt at a thank you gift turned out to be a disaster, and I will post a picture of it at some point to serve as a warning for others.

The blue cloche, however, has turned out wonderfully, but we still need to pick out a button for it and finish it off:

As it turns out, the Malabrigo we used felted as nicely (or possibly even more nicely) than the Savoy. The fabric is a bit thicker, but the slight variegation is visible if you look closely.

In the same batch of felting, I tried to churn out one of my fez concepts, based roughly on the top hat I made out of Knit.1, but it also turned out to be a complete disaster. The moral of the story is to always make a smaller, test version. Especially if you know a baby who might need a fez.

All is revealed

Even though I'm only teaching 8th grade 2/3 time, I still don't have a lot of time for blogging, especially when most of our blog has been eaten by spambots. I did go through and finally publish the legit comments on the last entry, but I just don't have there wherewithal to search for more. Omar will hopefully be talked into upgrading mt and I hope (readers?) that the spam nets have been improved.
Mrs. Weasley's bag is on (permanent?) hiatus. However, I have started my first socks in years! And am exploring the neato-bullseye afterthought heel with the hole in the gusset dear Liza consequence.
But the real reason I'm here, don't get me wrong, just in case you're not on flickr or ravelry (wtf is wrong with you?)
Secret Cotton Joy Project revealed: Love this yarn!
A BSG er...BSJ for Michelle's new spawn! Welcome to the world, Lil' Mil!

Also, what a lucky baby- a kitten and a Malabrigo blanket! I made sure to send a jersey Ikea blanket for actual puking on.

Our kitten is so grown up we now have almost identical black kitties. We like to sing "Black Kitty" to the tune of "Black Betty."

Must be the season of the witch

Omar's lovely Via Diagonale is waiting for me to crochet a bottom and strap on it. Then he is supposed to line it (we both live in fear of our sewing machine).
But in the meantime (I have no idea how to crochet an oval) --Mrs. Weasley's bag of Stitch Witchery is my first real slip stitch project. It's four shades of Cascade 220, two from my stash, two new.

This project has a theme song. Click here for youtube-video with blatant knitting references!

You can almost see my Dumbledore sticker. :) He is not dead.

Too bad to get natural light I have to take photos on our balcony with the trashy free stuffed chairs outside look.

Here's my secret project in Cotton Joy...

And here's a peek into Omar's knitting bag. What the hell is wrong with him? Isn't that Crystal Palace Splash I bought at Woolcott in 2003???

All will be revealed in time.

It's pretty much impossible for me not to include a photo of our kitten, Zeke, who is away being fixed today :) His sibs are now up for adoption and no longer here. It was a fun kitten party while it lasted. (Cats +blogs= <34eva)

He is whiskerless! I've been told they'll grow back, maybe he lost them in a fight. :) What is being cut off right now, though...ahem, those will not grow back.

God damn babies ruining the blog

Because I was at TYF last night and I forgot all my knitting*, I had to start a new project, natch. It was "Siesta Thursday" which means Terry and Fred gave in to our whining and stayed open until 10, so I wasn't budging.
Of course, I started a project with awesome self-striping Cotton Joy, but it's for a STUPID baby and I don't want to risk the fetus surfing onto the blog and peeking at it's new present. Stupid pre-natal internet access.
But anyway, I also got to buy new needles, finally my first pair of Bryspun circs! <3<3 <3 The only thing I don't love about Bryspun is their little too-bendy, too-blunt sock needles.
KiKi taught me how to do a long tail cast-on with two ends of the same ball, therefore eliminating the ever-present "how much do I need?" question, and the waste or frogging tears that always ensue. Where have you been all my life, KiKi? Oh yeah, Indiana.
We also finally got to meet Illanna after almost a year of living in the same area and shopping at the same LYS. :)
Tonight is Harry Potter Charmed Knits knitalong Night #2. I have hear rumors of tea-leaf readings.
We are working on the Mrs. Weasley Stitch Witchery Bag, but there's not a good picture of it online. It's a slip stitch bag worked in five pieces.
So just for a little color, I thought we would look at some stolen images of Mrs. Weasley from across the internet and see if we can get ratted out for bandwidth theft.

Now that's fabric

I have a hard time believing that knitted and crocheted things are really fabric. Sure, they have drape, weight, and can be used for all the same things that fabric can, but to me they are just what happens when you leave hands and yarn unsupervised.
Something about woven things feels like real, bonafide fabric. Maybe it's because you can take gorgeous macro shots like this, and not see any holes:

These have been done forever, yo. My mom's birthday has come and gone. My dad had a mini-stroke the next day, so the last thing on my mind was sending these. However, dad is fine now, and I'm starting to feel that "I need to mail this" guilt.

One of these things is not like the others: I ran out of warp, and then I forgot the ratio of warp yarns, so I have one that has more silk ribbon, is much drapier, and looks different.

However, I've added to this project. I want to crochet napkin rings out of the remaining ribbon, sew some matching beads to them, and then (gulp) sew some napkins. I am so intimidated. Now I finally have an ironing board, so I don't have any excuse. I also bought the fabric.

All in all, I really loved making these, and I want to weave again.

Here's a bonus. The AZ human society is getting 110 cats per day! I had to do something. I hooked up with a woman who takes in kittens too young for the shelter, and now I'm fostering one of her older litters.

The stuff dreams are knit of

I actually had a dream I was making a sweater. Kind of amazing, since a.) I live in AZ. b.) I haven't finished a garment in over a year.
I'm pretty resolved to rip out my Classic Elite premiere (pima tencel) coral Hourglass sweater. The length is wrong and it needs to be be reknit so the decreases are in the right place. Who knows if that will happen?
The stuff of blissful night time reveling?
The Bedjacket from Knitting Lingerie Style, of course.

It's been ages since I purchased a sweater's worth of yarn, and I'm hesitant. I'm considering substituting the self-same Classic Elite Premiere for the pattern yarn, which is wool and cotton. But I know it will have tons more drape and softness, and I'm not sure how that will affect the overall look of the garment. Opinions?
Obviously, I am not in love with that color, either. It would be nice in the coral, or a nice sagey or pale apple color. I think it needs to stay in almost the same tone, it would lose its vintage appeal and detailing in a darker color. Other color ideas for my skin tone? I can never find the right shade of pink, either.

Check out the Napoleon shot.

Holy crap, I actually finished something?

Alright, alright, so I'm blogging from work because I'm realy tired and I really can't face the tasks I have set to me today. But nevertheless, we finally blocked my sweet darling's birthday gift (only two and a half months behind schedule) and I thought you might like to see the Lacy Lamb in action. Happily, it grew quite a bit when we blocked it, since I was a little concerned about the length.

And, lucky for me, my darling took all the photots, so all I have to do is post them:

(Oh well, that's a little annoying, I forgot that MT likes to restart a post when you upload an image. Maybe I ought to show the other two via Flickr.)

Here's the edging. It's worked sideways, and then you pick up along one edge for the scarf. Pretty clever.

This is a nice arty shot of the main lace pattern, which was nice, simple, repetitive, and I still managed to screw up four or five times, resulting in much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Well, that does it. It looks like we're back in swing making stuff now, and we'll both be hard pressed to avoid playing around with Ravelry which might keep me chronicalling the "In Progress" shots a little more than I usually do.

wefty Betsy

I'm just behind with photos lately. I've been tutoring at two schools and I spend my mornings talking to kindergarteners about sounds. Have you checked out a kindergarten classroom lately? Holy crap. I can't look at the walls for too long or I feel faint from overstimulation. If I ever teach elementary school, I'm going to feng shui my classroom.
All told, it took me less than three weeks to complete the four placemats for my mother's birthday/mother's day. Good thing I had a two week Spring Break in there. The placemats are all done now, and have been sewn and had their fringe rotary cut. I'm making matching crocheted napkin rings from the leftover Mango Moon silk ribbon, and will add beads or buttons. I'm also going to get some nice cloth napkins to complete the gift, I heard Pier 1 is a good place for that.
Anyway, until I take some FO photos, here's a photo of placemat #1 on the loom at TYF, taken by Fred.

twisted dreams

When I finally closed my eyes on Saturday night, after much coffee and Peeps and silliness, I saw filaments of light spinning together like fibers in my hands. That's how much spinning I did this weekend! It was great. I was so inspired by my second spinning class at Tempe Yarn and Fiber. To think six months ago I was thinking of selling my wheel and all my fiber. I am glad I gave it a second chance. My wheel and I are becoming good friends. We understand each other's limitations. It really can do way more than I thought it could, now that I have learned more.
I love spinning because it combines some of my favorite aspects of knitting, color and texture. I am not so much about pattern, not into the binary nature of knit and purl, but the way things blend.
Speaking of blending, I learned how to hand blend fibers. This was very exciting and liberating. I did not want to purchase or mess with hand cards, and I was thrilled to know that many experienced spinners don't, either. That doesn't mean you can't create beautiful hand blended fibers. Woo!
This is my baby: most of the hard work was done by someone else. This is a Spritely Goods bat purchased at TYF to which I hand-added little bits of raspberry wool that I dyed ages ago. This is one of my favorite color combinations ever and I loooove the result, with the subtle sparkle that was already present in the bat. I will be making more of this.

You also notice this is plyed, Navajo plied, to be exact. Terry likes to make everyone feel good about taking to things right away. She told me I had natural aptitude for Navajo plying, which I just think is the coolest thing in the world now. It's like crocheting with your fingers to make plyed yarn, awesome. I love the effect it creates.

Here are a trifecta of yarns that I created recently. One of these you may have seen before, as I plied it up after my first spinning class in January. These all contain some of the same Hello Yarn hand painted fiber.
From the top: 1. Navajo plied. yay! 2. plied with supahsoft merino, dig those microns! 3. Hand blended solid pink and orange with a bit of the red from Adrian's. Also Navajo plied, I can't stop.

There's a missing 4th skien that is traditional two-ply, where did I put that? It was also born in January. I still have another 4 oz or so of this colorway, so I might end up making a bunch of related yarn for a shawl or some such.

How about more orange yarn! Never fear, I am here. Some solid Copper Moose BFL plied with self striping commercial sock yarn featured in these socks, which now live in MN with my grandmother. Where all wool socks should retire.

Lastly, years ago I was playing with Kool Aid and ended up with the most unnatural blue. I never touched it, but now that I can hand blend, I added some deep purple and some purple sparkles and we'll see what happens! I'm not really a little blue girl, but I like this better than the solid.

After the class, I spoiled myself with some dyed fushia locks, multi-color firestar, and some coral merino.

Next time: Weaving photos galore! The placemats are drying now on the shower rod, out of reach of the kitties. How I learned to stop worrying and cut the warp. And wash the fabric! Crazy stuff. And maybe Omar will show you my new scarf.

So many things

So many fiber things happened yesterday!
I learned to spin locks, and hand blend fiber, and Navajo ply and Andean bracelet ply. I am so excited about spinning for the first time in ages. My wheel is even behaving pretty well, but I think I need to sand and finish my treadle because yuck, it's getting a footprint on it.
I also finished my first weaving project, and Omar finished his first lace project. This is what happens when you spend 7 hours at TYF.
Of course we will have pictures, but you better comment on spinning and weaving or I will go away in a huff.

so very warped

It just sort of happened. The folks at Tempe Yarn and Fiber say the store is a "guilt-free zone," what that really means is that you will get sucked into depths of fiber art you never thought possible. Hehe.
So one Wednesday night, the "hypothetical placemats" were born as an idea for my mother's birthday on May 22. We talked about knitting, crocheting, felting...but the thing that stuck in my head was weaving. Who doesn't love a woven placemat?
A few weeks later, somewhere in a darkened yarn store in Tempe, the loom waits for me. It took two days of diligent work and lots of help to get it to this stage. This is Kromski Harp loom with a stand. It's a rigid heddle loom. I have no idea what that means.

My mother's favorite colors are blue and brown. Mine are orange and fushia. You see we have slightly different tastes. But I am WILD about these colors. The Mango Moon silk ribbon is the star and was the inspiration for the project. It's interspersed with some wool and cotton in beige and a brown tweed. It reminds me of an oyster shell. Can you tell how amazing the blue is, not a hokey baby blue but a natural pearlescent color with the slightest greenish tinge? And the browns! Deep true seal brown and an amazing deep maroon.

The yarn for the weft is as yet undecided. Here I was testing some of my handspun baby llama fiber as a possibility, but I think i will go for something less fuzzy (there's a bamboo I keep thinking about). This picture has such depth of color, I had to include it.

I'm thinking I will crochet some napkin rings out of the leftover ribbon.

All the knitting is still secret. All I can say is holy ends, batman!

And Omar! I don't know why he's not blogging. I'm done making excuses for him.

Friday night he and I stood agape as Terry demonstrated her sock knitting machine from the 1920s. Socks while you wait! That thing can knit a pair of socks faster than Grumperina. Faster than you can say Grumperina. ;) It's really very cool and an amazing piece of history.

Speaking of warped, have you seen the preview for Black Sheep?

knitting with flesh!

Okay, that was the gory version of my post title...
I'm planning on teaching the kids finger knitting this week, which will be fun. I have a bunch of acrylic bulky yarn and chopsticks when the older kids are ready to graduate. I am excited about trying it with the littles, though, like K-2, I think they will like it.
Look how thrilled this girl from google image search is about finger knitting, and she didn't even have someone as cool as me to teach her:

On the personal front, I can't reveal much, except that Tempe Yarn and Fiber is having a sock contest and the deadline is 9 days. I want to knit up one of the Bobble Bing! socks I designed last year for sockapalooza and never really wrote the whole pattern for. But I'm really bummed there are no size 2 double points anywhere to be found, no Pony Pearls, no Bryspuns. I need to start ASAP! I hate wooden sock needles, I am just inviting snaptitude. I could get more Bryspuns at the Fiber Factory in Mesa, but I don't think there are any Pony pearls in the state of Arizona.
Drat.
If only I could knit socks on my fingers.
